The Emotional First Aid Manual
by Janet Buell
Using physical first aid, a layperson can shorten healing time by preventing infection in a wound, help a drowning victim start breathing again, or keep blood circulating in a person with cardiac arrest until professional help restarts the heart. Until now, there have never been procedures developed for a layperson that could offer equivalent help for emotional loss or trauma. Now, those procedures are available in The Emotional First Aid Manual.
Emotional wounds can be cleansed by the use of compassionate communication. The desire to live can be rekindled by the discovery of self-destructive decisions made during times of loss. Emergency emotional aid can help a suicidal person survive long enough to receive life-saving professional help. The key is in the simplicity of the techniques. By patterning emotional first aid exactly after its physical first aid counterpart, and by making the procedures simple enough for a layperson to learn, this manual can duplicate the success of physical first aid.
"This book makes it very easy to be of help," said Will Foreman, PhD, former president of the International Association of Trauma Counselors. "Simply select the section from the manual that is most appropriate and follow the instructions."

You’re Not the Boss of Me
by Sam Durbin
Sam Durbin, a resident of Integrity House, explains why there is a picture of a pepper tree on the cover of the book, “You’re Not the Boss of Me.”
“When I was eight years old, my life was about as awful as it ever would be. I hadn’t eaten in several days was getting weak. I leaned up against my friend, the tree, and thought, ‘I wish I could just die. I wish I could close my eyes and never wake up.’ Just then, a gust of wind swept by and shook lots of red peppers out of the tree onto my face. It felt like the tree was crying and when I stood up, he creaked, like he was hurting too. No one had ever cried because of me. No one had ever cared what happened to me.
That tree taught me that a friend didn’t need to talk, just listen.”
Once homeless and alone, author Sam Durbin managed to find a lifeline of support and acceptance at Integrity House, a program for people with disabilities in Santa Ana, California. His book contains stories of self determinism. Integrity House encourages disabled adults to learn to make decisions for their own lives and be treated like the adults they are. Freedom and responsibility come when people respect themselves enough to work hard and face life as grownups. Integrity House provides these individuals with a circle of support. There is so much we can learn from the stories Sam tells.

Burnout
What you can do to put Excitement back into Your Life
by Janet Buell
Here's what a few of our readers had to say about it.
"I expected that this book might help me get over feeling so burned out on the job. It did! But it also helped me in areas I never expected or realized I needed. After 15 years of marriage, I was feeling less excited about my wife. The excitement is back. So is my feeling about the benefits of fatherhood. It's fun again. I haven't even finished the last chapters yet, but already there's been a big difference. This is such a practical down-to-earth book and yet it's very powerful and lots of fun to read. Thanks."
Tom Barnes from California
"The thing that amazed me most about this book was that it didn't just eliminate my feeling of burnout at work - which was the problem that caused me to buy it. It helped in areas I wasn't even aware I needed help in, like my feelings about my church, my relationship, my music, and even the state of my finances. The exercises weren't always easy. But they worked. And as I did one and then another, I started building up a feeling of pure joy. I feel at least 10 years younger now and so excited about life again."
A reader from St. Louis, MO.

Your Mind and Body are a Corporation, and You are the CEO
by Janet Buell
Here's what one of our readers had to say about the book.
"This book presents some ideas that seem radical when they are first presented but come to seem entirely logical and practical when you consider them for a while. The proof of the pudding is when you do the drills in the book. I felt a little foolish in the beginning, communicating with my 'corporation', but then as it 'answered', I began to realize how much it had been trying to tell me over the years. It was like floodgates opened. I've learned more about my 'self' in the week since I bought the book than I had in many, many years."

How to Free Yourself from Manipulation:
There’s one overriding need which makes us susceptible to being manipulated. That’s our constant search for approval, admiration, and appreciation. This might seem like a strange idea. Haven’t we been taught since childhood to try to gain the approval of our parents, teachers, relatives and most of the rest of the people on this planet? If you stop teaching children to seek approval, how will they know what’s right or wrong? There are better ways to teach children than by withholding or bestowing approval on them. The procedures in this booklet will help you free yourself from the need for constant approval and thus from the manipulation of others.
